Macular degeneration is an aging change that causes thinning and retinal atrophy. Typical dry macular degeneration findings include drusen and retinal pigment atrophy. In some patients, macular degeneration progresses to wet macular degeneration, also known as exudative macular degeneration. These cases involve the abnormal growth of new retinal blood vessels, known as neovascular membranes, that leak protein and bleed below the surface of the retina, causing more abrupt and severe vision loss.
